Water leak causes damage at Westerville Library

Wednesday, March 28, 2018

All areas of the library are now open. Pardon our dust as we continue to make repairs in the affected areas over the coming weeks and months.

Monday, March 26, 2018

On March 26 at 5pm, the following sections of the children's area will reopen:

  • Activity Center
  • Collections: juvenile new books, non-fiction, readers
  • Computers (except early literacy stations)
  • Imagination Station

(Sections that will remain closed until further notice include Homework Help Center, Picture Book Room, and these collections: juvenile chapter books, graphic novels and fiction.)

At this time, we have counted nearly 5,800 books damaged beyond reasonable repair.

Westerville, OH – The Westerville Public Library has closed the children’s area until further notice, due to an overnight water heater failure that occurred on March 16, 2018.

The extent of the damage is not yet known. A restoration crew is currently working to extract water as library staff assess damage to the building, furniture, computer equipment, books, etc.

“A water heater leaked on the floor above those areas and water collected in the ceiling, eventually causing several ceiling tiles to collapse under the weight,” according to Erin Francoeur, Executive Director of the Westerville Public Library.

Areas affected include:

  • Book and magazine collections in these areas
  • Homework Help Center
  • Imagination Station
  • Kids and Teen Computer Labs
  • Picture Book Room
  • Teen Room (now open for business)

Sections of the building will reopen once basic functionality can be restored and each area has been deemed safe for visitors. All other areas of the building, including the Technology Center, Media Department, Reference Department, Circulation, Local History Center and the meeting rooms remain open.

Customers can continue to request items from the affected collections, which are currently denoted as “in repair” until properly assessed. For those wishing to access specific titles immediately, requests to borrow from other Ohio libraries can be made through SearchOhio.

“We hope that our insurance will cover all necessary repairs, but for those in the community who are reaching out to ask how they can help, the Westerville Library Foundation has set up a GoFundMe page,” says Francoeur.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
